From Shadow to Spotlight

All the composers on this hour-long program were marginalized one

way or another in their lifetime. Clara Schumann was a celebrated

piano virtuoso, but she composed in an era when composition was

considered a man's job. Franz Schubert was only beginning to

receive the public recognition when he died at the age of 31. George

Antheil, John Cage, and Erik Satie each marched to their own

beat, and the musical establishment made fun of them for it.

Fortunately, all five left behind a treasure trove of works that lets us

celebrate their rich artistic legacies today.

Pianist Pedja Muzijevic weaves music and words into a program

that crosses borders and styles and brings these overlooked artists

and their stories back to life.
